Taking the time to clean up your Google Analytics setup at the end of the year ensures you’ll start the new year on the right foot, with accurate data that provides actionable insights. By following this checklist, you’ll not only reduce clutter but also position your business for data-driven success in the months to come.
Here is our Top five GA4 action items to get you started:
- Start with conversions: Are your conversions still being properly tracked? Maybe you’ve added new forms or key actions to your website this year. We recommend going through your website and triggering these actions to be sure they are tracking in the way you’ll get the most value out of them.
- Default Channel Grouping: Are you properly tracking acquisition within your desired channel groupings? Pull an acquisition report. If you’re seeing a significant amount of traffic in the “Unassigned” category, drill into it and see what’s happening. It could be a new channel not yet accounted for or broken UTM tracking. Either way, taking a look at this will help you get a better understanding of true acquisition next year.
- Check your connections: Is your GA4 connected and optimized to run with Google Ads, Google Play, Search Console, etc. Make sure you’re taking advantage of the added functionality and reporting connecting to these platforms brings.
- Do a quick clean up: Start the year with a clean property. Clean up the following:
- User and User Permissions - make sure you have the right people accessing your data. Take a quick look here and take out any users who no longer need access
- Delete unused reports: Clean up custom reports that are no longer relevant.
- Clean up segments: If you have segments from old campaigns or strategies, consider removing them to avoid clutter.
- Check your filters: GA data filters can impact the data you’re seeing in the platform. Is your internal traffic filter up to date? Make sure you have the right filters set and clean up any unnecessary filters.
Can cleaning your data really make that much of a difference?
